Homework in Year 5

A strong partnership between home and school is vital for your child to succeed.

To help your child progress in English, it is very important that you continue to hear and/or question your child regarding reading every night, even if you feel they are fluent. The most important aspect of reading at this age is the understanding of what has been read. Discussing the text, the characters, the language and what your child feels about the book is very beneficial. The children will build up stamina for reading through aiming to read at least a chapter each night from their Reading Pathway book.

In Mathematics, you can help your child by discussing the day-to-day mathematics that are part of everyday life; shopping, time, measuring weight, length and liquids. A child in Year 5 is expected to have rapid-recall of all their multiplication tables and related division facts to 12 times 12; this can be practised at home. See the online homework sheet for top tips and games that can support.

Homework will be issued each Friday afternoon. We ask that the children return their homework books by Wednesday morning. If they are struggling with any of the work or have any questions, encourage your child to speak to a teacher, before Wednesday, and they will be happy to offer support.

Please make sure that your child completes all their homework and that it is of a high standard.

The reading book pages you have heard should be noted in the homework diary and initialled each night with a comment about your discussions (e.g. new vocabulary, how well they summarised/recalled the chapter etc)

There is space in the diary for any messages you wish to send to your child’s teacher.

Your child should have a login to the 'My Maths' and 'Spelling Frame' websites which are often used for homework purposes.
