Observing the effects of different liquids on our teeth

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 2 Year: 2017 - 2018

This week, the children have been learning about how to look after and care for their teeth. They created informative posters about which foods were more likely to damage our teeth and which foods wouldn't have too much of an effect. We then carried out an experiment with different liquids and eggs. Egg shells are made of calcium, the same as our teeth, therefore the eggs represented our teeth. We had 10 cups of liquid and these were: full fat Pepsi, Diet Coke, orange juice, water and blackcurrant juice. We placed the eggs in each cup , predicted which liquid would have the most effect on the egg or our tooth and left them overnight. Yesterday, we found out what had happened to each egg, the children were horrified by some of the results. The children then worked in groups of 3 and tried to clean the eggs with toothpaste and a tooth brush. They did a really great job cleaning their eggs but it was interesting to see the effects of each liquid on the egg.
