Religious Education
At Sherwood Primary School, we take an enquiry-based approach to Religious Education, with each unit of work focused around a key question. Children develop their knowledge and understanding of religious beliefs, practises and traditions through the exploration of sacred texts and religious stories, handling special artefacts and visiting places of worship. We follow the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education and teach Christianity, Islam and Hindu Dharma progressively across the year groups. Our local demographic is represented through our curriculum with units on Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism also planned across the Key Stages. Children also encounter non-religious world views as they explore, compare and contrast different faiths.
Through our Religious Education lessons, we focus on critical thinking skills, on personal reflection into the children’s own thoughts and feelings, on growing subject knowledge and nurturing spiritual development. Our enquiry-based curriculum enables pupils to respond to a range of important questions related to spiritual development and the meaning and purpose of life.
Parents and Carers who wish to withdraw their child from Religious Education lessons are requested to contact the Headteacher for a discussion.
At Sherwood Primary School, Religious Education plays an important role, along with all other curriculum areas in promoting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our children. Our Religious Education curriculum is carefully planned to support the promotion of British Values; Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.
