Science
Science is an integral part of our lives. It is a body of knowledge built up through experimental testing ideas and methodology. Science at Sherwood is about igniting children’s curiosities and encouraging ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live.
SCIENCE AT SHERWOOD
At Sherwood, we foster children's inquisitiveness and allow them to explore their thoughts and ideas through outdoor learning, observations, practical investigations and thorough research. Our belief is that all children are entitled to a broad, challenging and exciting science education which allows all children to leave Sherwood as confident and knowledge rich scientists. Science at Sherwood allows pupils to revisit knowledge from previous Science units helping them progressively to build on their developing Science knowledge and deepening their understanding of the world around them. Vocabulary is present in every lesson with children able to explain their findings using scienfitic language. Science starts at the heart of EYFS and is under 'Understanding the World' strand. Children are provided with a variety of non-fiction texts across the curriculum and linked fiction texts to enhance their learning in Science.
Our aims in teaching science include the following:
- Preparing our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world.
- Fostering concern about, and active care for, our environment.
- Helping our children acquire a growing understanding of scientific ideas.
- Helping develop and extend our children’s scientific concept of their world.
- Developing our children’s understanding of the international and collaborative nature of science.
Science Principles at Sherwood.
Science at Sherwood is an important part of our school and as such staff and children, through staff and pupil voice, have worked on a set of principles that underpin all science carried out in school. These principles allow us to enhance as well as continuously assess science provision at Sherwood. These are displayed in individual classrooms and will be revisited at regular intervals by both children and staff.
Please refer to the attached document for details of our Science principles.
