Physical Education and Sport

It is our aim to deliver a high-quality, challenging Physical Education curriculum, that is fun, engaging and will inspire all pupil to lead physically active lives.  We aim to maximise the development of every child's ability and achievement in the area of PE, enabling them to know more about physical activity and how it is a key component of a healthy lifestyle.

At Sherwood, PE, competitive sport and outdoor learning are given a high profile. We recognise and highly value the benefits of a strong Physical Education curriculum and extra-curricular activity on raising children’s aspirations, self-esteem, emotional and physical wellbeing. We understand that Physical Education is also a key ingredient in the battle against childhood obesity and encourage young people to live active and healthy lives.

As children move through school, knowledge and skills are built upon and learning tasks place sequentially.  Our curriculum is designed in a way that enables the teachers to have the flexibility to ensure that the children develop knowledge and skills through the use of a wide range of sports.  We allow all children the opportunity to compete in sport, allowing children to build confidence in their own abilities and develop sporting values.

As a School, we participate in The School Games is a programme which puts physical activity and school sport at the heart of our work, providing our children with the opportunity to learn through competition to achieve their personal best.

According to the UNICEF Convention on the Rights of a Child, 'All children have the right to play'. We believe that Physical Education plays an important role in developing pupils’ enjoyment of games and sport.

Following the additional PE and Sports funding provided by the government and allocated to Sherwood Primary School, we are pleased to share our funding action plan with you. The quality and standard of Sport at Sherwood is very high. We have however taken the necessary steps to ensure that developments are sustainable and have planned to use the funding to further develop the leadership of School Sport at all levels at Sherwood. Alongside the exercises built into our monitoring and evaluation schedule, we build analysis of pupil achievement, staff and pupil questionnaires into our self evaluation to support future needs and therefore target funding to secure good outcomes for all children.
