Digital Leaders

Following their Youtube Survey, our digital leaders have produced a great top tips video for using Youtube.

Friday 7th March 2025

Our Digital Leaders met this morning to discuss the suggestions in the pupil suggestion boxes. We had recieved a suggestion about laptops in School. We do have a bank of laptops that are available for use, but as we have 1:1 devices in school, we do not fully utilise the laptops. There are issues with charging laptops in class. Mrs Lumb is keen to ensure that we still access windows applications, so is looking into a longer term plan of installing more computers in shared areas for pupils to access.

We have also received the following requests and agreed:

Add TopMarks icon to iPad home screens.

Review BASE iPad games and take suggestions from children in BASE.

Time limits for healthy use of iPads in BASE to be discussed with the BASE managers.

We discussed issues regarding access to YouTube in school. Examples for drawing tutorials were used. Mrs Lumb to look into safe access to YouTube and feedback at the next meeting. We talked about Espresso as a video resource but some digital leaders think that there are no tutorial

Task set: Create a Healthy Screen Poster to display around school.

Friday 10th January 2025

Our digital leaders met this morning to review the results of our pupil Youtube survey (270 responses). Here are the headlines:

  • 75% of children at Sherwood access Youtube.

  • 35% use the platform for gaming videos.

  • 25% use the platform to watch TV shows.

  • 50% follow Youtubers on the platform. Our digital leaders pointed out that this may mean that 50% of our children login with an account. The other half access the platform without logging in.

  • 60% of children access YouTube for 1 - 1.5 hours per day.

  • 25% access the platform for 2 + hours per day.

  • 45% of children stated that the platform affects their mental health in a nagative way.

  • 125 Key Stage 2 children would like to talk to an adult about their use of YouTube.

As a team, we agreed these next steps:

We would make a short video of top tips for children and parents. This would include some suggestions on screen limit times, parental controls and healthy digital habits.

Mrs Lumb to share the outcomes with teachers to support conversations in the classroom and build top tips into digital literacy lessons.

Key Stage 2 digital leader to meet on Monday to film top tips.

Suggestion boxes: There was one suggestion in the suggestion box for discussions. This was to have free time on the iPads during wet play. Mrs Lumb would speak to support staff to ensure that appropriate supervision is in place if this were to be allowed.

Friday 1st November 2024

We welcomed our digital leaders to their first meeting. Our members all shared the range of technology that they have in their homes. We discussed the role of promoting safe and responsible use of technology both in School and at home.

Each member shared their experience with Technology and the technology that they have access to in their own homes. There was a range of responses but 11/12 members all have an iPad. Our discussion then turned to YouTube as most member talked about accessing YouTube at home. We talked about the positives - this including connecting with people with similar interests. Our members use YouTube for:

Drawing

Gaming solutions

Following a comedy Youtuber

Homework

The members also had a good awareness of risks:

Inappropriate words

Inappropriate content

Some members talked about the rules in their homes and how parents have controls set up.

When we talked about the addictive nature of YouTube, the members were unaware of how to break the algorithm written into YouTube.

We agreed to survey each class to find out how many children across School use YouTube or YouTube Kids and then follow this up with posters and an assembly on safe use of this platform.

Ella and Sam will work with Mrs Lumb to create the survey for each member to complete with their class.
