Year 3 Robotics Day

This week, three children from Year 3 enjoyed a Robotocs Day hosted by Queen's Drive Primnary School.

The children started by following instructions to create a base 'K-bot' without any adaptations. This had a battery powered motor that would allow the bot to go forwards or backwards by flicking a switch. They were then given three different challenges where they were required to use their own ideas and initiative to alter and modify, test and then make further amendments to their bots in order progress and to score points on their challenges.

Their first challenge was to knock down nine 'skittles' (plastic tubes and wooden blocks). They were only allowed to test their modifications three times and they received a point for each skittle they knocked down.

The next challenge was for the 'K-bot' to move up a ramp and drop into a box. The ramp was in two parts with a widening gap which the original bot would drop through without modifications.

The final challenge was for two bots to compete against each other (robot wars!). The winning bot would knock the opposing team's bot off the bench or push it furthest from the mid-point.

After the points were calculated, Sherwood came 2nd out of the eight teams. Well done children - an amazing result!
