Oral Health
At Sherwood Primary School we promote good oral health for all children. Tooth decay is largely preventable but remains a serious problem among young children in the UK. National surveys in 2022 found that nearly a quarter of 5 year olds in England have tooth decay, affecting 3 to 4 teeth on average. Having decayed teeth removed is also the most common reason for surgery under a general anaesthetic for children aged 6 to 10.
In Foundation we learn all about the importance of looking after our teeth through our 'People who help us' topic, early in the Autumn Term. Whilst exploring this theme, we have a visit from a dentist where children have the opportunity to handle resources and ask lots of questions. We continue to promote good oral health throughout the year with ongoing discussions about daily routines and healthy diets.
The NHS guidance for children aged 3 - 6 years:
- Brush at least twice daily for about 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
- Brush last thing at night before bed and at least on 1 other occasion.
- Parents or carers should brush the teeth.
- Use children's fluoride toothpaste containing no less than 1,000ppm of fluoride (check label) unless a dentist advises family toothpaste containing between 1,350ppm and 1,500ppm fluoride.
- Use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
- Spit out after brushing and don't rinse – if you rinse, the fluoride won't work as well.
