Year 2 Collage in Response to the Work of Henri Matisse and Bridget Riley

Year 2 studied the collage styles of the artists Henri Matisse and Bridget Riley.  They made comments about each artist's choice of colour, technique and overall impact.  We painted our own collage materials by colour mixing primary colours to make a palette of secondary colours.  The children enjoyed working in pairs to arrange their papers in response to 'The Snail' by Henri Matisse.  They were very impressed with the large-scale size of the original!

We then moved on to exploring the very different style of optical artist, Bridget Riley.  Her pieces involve political illusions, often in monochrome black and white.  We linked our artwork to our Sustainability Challenge - It's Up to Us - and created Bridget Riley bumble bees!  The black stripes on the bee were cut in response to the optical line patterns of the artist.
