Year 2 Dip-dye Fabric with Rubbings from a Range of Surfaces

Lesson: Art and design

Class: Year 2 Year: 2022 - 2023

Year 2 have explored the dip dye process in their textiles over the last two weeks.  They folded white fabric squares in halves and quarters, corner to corner, to form triangles and concertinas.  They dipped part of the fabric in dye and watched it creep along the threads.  They built up patterns using the three primary colours.  Next, the children were offered a range of surfaces or textures to choose from.  They worked over their dip dyed fabric to create rubbings using oil pastels.  We used a range of man-made and natural textures.  The children reviewed their dip dyes and their experimental rubbings on paper before transferring to fabric.  We are very pleased with the results!
