Year One are learning about plants
Lesson: Science
Class: Year 1 Year: 2024 - 2025
Year One are enjoying their weekly walks around the school grounds, observing the seasonal changes and learning all about plants. The children have studied the range of trees and can confidently identify an evergreen tree and a deciduous tree. They have expanded their scientific vocabulary, using words to explain why a tree is evergreen or deciduous. We enjoyed classifying with evergreen and deciduous leaves, creating colourful montages of leaves using oil pastels and chalks. This modelled seasonal colours beautifully and how all the evergreen leaves were green, glossy or need-like in appearance. The classes loved naming types of tree in our grounds and confidently recalled this knowledge in this week's lesson. Today, Year One identified the parts of a plant by observing a selection of different plants. They made excellent comparisons, studying their flowers, foliage and size. They even noticed how the heather had needle-like leaves and is more hardy than other plants for the winter months. Lovely observational drawings Year One!
